Autism Clinic

Pediatric Neurobehavioral Diagnostics and Innovative Health Care Concepts is proud to announce the Autism Clinic of Idaho!  We offer both diagnostic evaluations and a full range of treatments.

Autism is part of a broad spectrum of Pervasive Developmental Disorders.  In general, autism spectrum disorders are characterized by impaired social interaction and communication skills, and a limited range of activities and interests.  When people think of autism, a particular image may come to mind.  Perhaps one might think of Dustin Hoffman from the movie, Rain Man.  Or perhaps of a child who is trapped in his own little world, with little ability of functioning independently in the real world. The truth is that there are many forms of autism, ranging from low to high functioning. In addition, children and adults with autism, just like most  “normal” people, have individual differences, distinct personalities, and range with respect to cognitive abilities (e.g., learning, IQ, etc.).

If you suspect your child may have autism, an evaluation is a crucial first step.  First this will determine if a diagnosis of autism is indeed appropriate.  It is not uncommon for other neurocognitive disorders to “look like” autism, such as developmental dyspraxia, language disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, etc.  Once a diagnosis is made, you will have a better understanding of your child’s specific challenges and a specialized treatment plan can be made.

Early intervention is the key to a positive prognosis.   The medical and mental health profession has grown substantially with respect to treating autism and other pervasive developmental disorders.  It was not long ago when a child was diagnosed with autism, he or she was institutionalized or significantly isolated.  However, today, with intervention, many children with autism progress in their learning and other skills, and can lead happy and productive lives.
